Hardwood vs Engineered Wood Flooring

Hardwood and Engineered Wood flooring might be difficult to distinguish from each other unless you are a flooring professional. Both are available in different colors and species, although true hardwood floors tend to have more variety than engineered wood.

Advantages of Hardwood Flooring

  • Can be sanded & refinished several times over the floor’s lifetime
  • Very tight seams in between boards
  • Usually lasts around 30 years, but can last up to 100 if properly installed & maintained
  • Wider range of colors and species than Engineered Wood
  • Easy to maintain

Disadvantages of Hardwood Flooring

  • Must be nailed down to subfloor, which requires an experienced professional to install
  • Can warp in damp, humid conditions
  • Not recommended for installation over concrete slab

Advantages of Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Looks very similar to true hardwood floors
  • Less expensive than hardwood
  • Can last 25-30 years when properly installed & maintained
  • Easy to DIY install
  • More resistant to warping in damp, humid conditions
  • Floors can be nailed down, floating, or glued down
  • Easy maintenance

Disadvantages of Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Not as strong as true hardwood
  • Consists of a thin layer of hardwood bonded over a substrate of high-quality plywood
  • Can only be sanded & refinished once because of thin top layer
  • Fewer design options than hardwood

Lifespan

Both hardwood and engineered wood floors will last for a long time if properly installed & maintained. Engineered wood floors can last for 25-30 years and true hardwood averages a 30-year lifespan but can last up to 100 years!
